Storytelling Night Comes to Leamington
Written by Clay on April 1, 2014
When Kat Quatermass, who runs the celebrated Dreamfired Storynights series on the edge of the Lake District was looking for a second home for International performance storytelling evenings she knew Warwickshire had a gap in the market. No story clubs (like folk clubs, but with people sharing stories instead of music) based in the area, and none of the theatres or arts centres regularly programming storytelling either. Kat worked for Warwickshire Arts Service in 2008 so she also knew it was a county with loads of lovers of literature and fab events like Warwick Words.
The final venue chosen to launch the new series on April 10th is ‘no 75’ the Lounge’s new function room in Leamington. The venue was chosen partly for the fantastic looking sofas and fireplace, partly because the management at The Lounge are really keen to support events and happy to charge a fee relating to how well the evening does, and also because of the great food and drink they have on offer.
The series launches with a visit from International performer Fred Versonnen in April and then goes on to feature British Award for Storytelling Excellence winner Tim Ralphs in June and National Storytelling Laureate Katrice Horsely in September.
The crucial thing to understand about these nights is that the events are performance, not readings, and this is not just the usual fairytale fayre, and definitely not for children. Fred’s show is a story of love and suspense set in Barnum era circuses, whilst Tim rebrands Beelzebub – bringing ancient devil stories into a contemporary setting and Katrice takes a look at how words bind and constrain us.
There’s opportunities for local performers too – as each evening the event kicks off at 7.30 with stories, poetry and song from local and regional performers – Leamington favourite Julie Boden brings the poetry to April 10th. People interested in reserving a place (as audience or to perform at future events) can call 07891487375 or check out www.dreamfired.co.uk but tickets £8 (£6 under 18’s and full time students) cash only, on the door.
