The Belgrade Theatre Coventry Introduces
Fame – The Musical
Review by: @lianekate
It’s true to say that Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre certainly rocked to the sounds of 1988 last night with the first run of Fame the Musical. With a packed theatre we waited in anticipation for leggings, lycra and mayhem, with of course the unmistakable big musical and dance performances, and we were not disappointed!
Based on the Oscar-winning musical film and hugely successful TV series, Fame – The Musical is back with an exciting new production that has been brought up-to-date and into the 21st Century.
The show opens with audition to the 2014 intake to PA, New York High School for the Performing Arts. The cast are found chatting on mobiles and taking pictures with tablets as they arrive for the first day. There are a few witty drop-ins of musical stars of 2014, modernising the musical for today’s audiences, while maintaining strong links with the nostalgia of David De Silva’s quarter-of-a-century old musical.
The choreography has classical and contemporary overtones, with the rich musical score, creating a synergy with the audience who seemed to embrace the energy throughout the dance scenes, songs and of course the narrative.
The real reason for going, I would say for the dancing, and this is where the performance really excels. The dance energy of the choreographed routines is delivered with passion, along with an infectious musical score. The audience response to the energy in the room was to simply join in, as the whole theatre danced along to the finale. Glancing around the theatre we were met with a ‘sea of smiles’ even on the faces of some of the reluctant gents in the room!
Would we recommend a night at Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre with the Cast from Fame? Certainly we would. If you are looking for a sing along, dance along and all round wide smile experience, book your seat this week. Matinees and evening performances run this week until Saturday 7th June.
“This exhilarating new production will take you on a high-octane roller coaster ride through dizzy heights and crashing lows as a group of star-struck wannabes embark on their quest for the ultimate accolade” (Fame)
